Henryk Gorecki’s third symphony, also known as the “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs”, became an unexpected crossover success in 1992 with a recording by soprano Dawn Upshaw and the London Sinfonietta conducted by David Zinman. The symphony marked a change in compositional style for Górecki, who was previously identified as a member of the modernist wing of European music, and is steeped in simple chant like melodies and rich consonant harmonies. This new recording by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Donald Runnicles, new chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony, features Grammy Award-winning American soprano Christine Brewer.

According to its conductor Paavo Jarvi, the two works performed on this new CD by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 10, which was premiered in 1953 shortly after the death of Stalin, and Estonian composer Veljo Tormis’s Overture No.2 from 1959 represent the reaction of two different and distinct voices to the era of the infamous Soviet dictator. They appear together as important compositions emerging from two countries linked under the soviet system at a common point in their history, and share the same urgency, conviction and strength. The Cincinnati Symphony and Paavo Jarvi featured the Shostakovich Tenth on a hugely successful tour of Europe in April of 2008 that included sold-out performances in Vienna, Amsterdam and Paris.
