On this CD she sings a selection of songs and arias from the baroque period by Porpora, Vivaldi, and Monteverdi amongst others, alongside 20th century pieces from her native South America by Piazzola, Guastavino, and Villa-Lobos. Europa is a collection of works for violin and piano that were written in central Europe during the first part of the 20th century including the Hungarian composer Bartók’s First Rhapsody, the Czech composer Janáček’s Sonata, the Polish composer Szymanowski’s “Myths”, and the Rumanian composer Enesco’s Third Sonata are pieces that reflect their strong links to their national musical heritage. The performers are the talented French violinist David Grimal and pianist Georges Pludermacher.

The Turkish pianist/composer Fazıl Say has forged a major international reputation as both performer and recording artist. His new work, 1001 Nights in the Harem, a violin concerto based on the collection of fairytales “One Thousand and One Nights, was commissioned by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra for the disc’s soloist, Patricia Kopatchinskaja. Say’s other featured pieces are Alla Turka Jazz, Patara Ballet, and Summertime Fantasy.

Last year, the esteemed conductor Marc Minkowski joined Naïve for a long-term collaboration, beginning with a universally acclaimed recording of the stage music of Georges Bizet (V5130). In this new release he conducts Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble and a wonderful cast of singers, including Lucy Crowe, Nathalie Stutzmann and Colin Balzer, in a version of J S Bach’s choral masterpiece the Mass in B Minor that features 10 voices rather than the usual full choir.
